What would a person go thru when kidneys shut down,how can you tell?

my husband is at stage 5 kidney failure @15% working,he will not take one of my sons kidney,so my husband is being put on a list,his Dr. says he does not need dialysis right now because his levels are good,I do not understand that,My husband also has a heart problem (which ia working on 45%) and a diabetic,Im worring about his kidneys shutting down,what do i need to look out for,please give some advise
