Imovie File Conversion?

Im working on a school Imovie project and I got a file last night from a windows computer that has a video clip that I need. It was originally not accepted as it was so I changed it to .mov and it still would not be accepted. The error message is"This file is not a movie" but it played at home on windows media player fine. Can I convert it?
