My source .mov files look sweet but my rendered files in my timeline and an exported .mov file look bad. Why?

Final Cut Express 4.0 Source files shot on Canon 5D full HD. Source files are excellent. Timeline and Exported Quicktime movies show pixelation. I do not use any intermediate CODEC (do not know how to) but I add minimal effects. I can not identify the cause. Help.
